22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. James 1:22-25 (NIV)
We must follow these 2 steps when studying the Bible.
If we don’t obey the Word after hearing it, what’s the point of reading it in the first place?
The Bible is packed full of truth, knowledge and wisdom.
It tells us of the miraculous things Jesus did.
It tells of the miraculous things that can happen in our lives.
But we’ll experience any of it if we don’t do what it says.
Like verse 24 says…
It is like looking in the mirror then immediately forgetting what you look like.
Have you ever wanted to learn something and acquired the tools needed to learn, but never used the tools so you could learn?
I must confess, I’ve wanted to learn how to play the guitar for years.
I actually still want to learn.
Over the years, I have purchased at least four guitars.
I’m sure you know where this is heading.
The first time started out okay.
I signed up for a class but ended up quitting it because the times didn’t work out for me.
I ended up selling that first guitar.
The second time I bought a guitar, I also bought DVDs to learn.
I think I might have watched the first DVD.
I ended up giving that guitar away.
I had similar situations with the next two guitars.
The point I’m trying to make here is…
I had all the tools at my fingertips but I didn’t learn anything because I didn’t put the tools to use.
My music teacher had all the knowledge to teach me but I didn’t do what he said.
The DVDs had everything I needed to become a bonafide guitar player, but I didn’t do what they taught.
The only way I will ever learn how to play the guitar is by doing.
There are great things God wants to do in all of our lives.
We need to pick up our Bibles, listen to what it says, then do it.
And we will be blessed in what we do.
Will you listen to the Word then do it?
Lord, thank you for your Word that is full of the truth, knowledge and wisdom.
I pray that we will hear your Word then do it.
Allow us to understand how great you are and how you want to use us to do great things.
We love you.
In Jesus’s name I pray, amen.
